English Grammar Present Simple Verb Tense
The present simple tense is used to refer to an actions or event that
- Habits - repeated actions - actions that happen on a regular basis
- I go to work everyday.
- My mother cooks dinner every night.
- Emotions - to state feeling
- I am happy.
- We are upset.
- Facts - statements that are always true
- The sun is hot.
- Dogs do not talk.
- Static Verbs - verbs that can not be in the continuous form
- I love the book.
- The food tastes good.
The present simple tense uses the base form of the verb, except the verb "to be", but -s is added to the base verb for 3rd person.
Note: the present simple tense is also used in other parts of English grammar, such as conditional statements and the future tense.
